HIV/AIDS and Incarceration
HIV/AIDS in correctional facilities (prisons and jails) has been a significant issue since the beginning of the epidemic. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, while overall rates of infection are decreasing in Federal and state prisons, the rate of AIDS cases among the prison population remains more than 2½ times the rate in the general U.S. population.
